Can I sell genuine antiquities?

Old decorative objects, yes. A genuine antiquity is a legal category with real consequences, and this is the one that catches honest sellers.

Most old things, yes. Antiques & Vintage Decor is a category and it is a good one.

A genuine antiquity is different, and it is the single most likely way an honest seller gets into trouble here — because the object looks like ordinary old stock and is not.

The distinction that matters

Old means made a long time ago. Furniture, brass, textiles, decorative objects, household things.

An antiquity is a legal category in India, covering certain objects above a defined age and things of historical, archaeological or artistic significance — temple pieces, sculpture, inscriptions, manuscripts, coins and bronzes among them. Dealing in these is regulated, registration can be required, and export is restricted.

The consequences are not a listing coming down. This is the one area on Metzee where getting it wrong is a legal matter rather than a policy one.

What to do if you suspect you have one

Do not list it and ask later. List it after, not before.

Find out what it is. A museum, a recognised dealer or the relevant authority. An opinion from somebody who handles these is worth more than any amount of searching.

Ask specifically about registration, because that is the part people do not know exists.

This is genuinely not something to resolve from a blog post, including this one. What this page can tell you is that the category exists and that the question is real.

What is clearly fine

  • Twentieth-century furniture, brass and copperware
  • Vintage textiles, saris, shawls — ordinary ones
  • Old tins, advertising, bottles, tools, cameras, typewriters
  • Family silver and ordinary jewellery
  • Old books and prints that are not manuscripts

In other words, almost all of what actually sells. Selling antiques and vintage decor

And what else gets caught alongside

Religious objects removed from a site. Even a fragment.

Anything from an archaeological context, however it reached you.

Material from protected wildlife, which is its own regime entirely — ivory especially. Can I sell ivory, shells or feathers?

On provenance

For anything old and valuable, the paperwork is both your protection and your price. Know how it reached you and be able to say it. What is provenance?

"It was in the family" is a start and not a record.
