Starting a sports memorabilia collection

Begin with programmes and tickets. They are cheap, dateable, and nobody has to take your word for them.

This is a provenance category, and the cheapest way into it is to start with the things whose provenance is printed on them.

Where the first money should go

Programmes, tickets, scorecards and photographs. They carry a date and an event on their face, they are inexpensive, and they teach you paper condition and the feel of the period.

They are also the part of the category where you are least likely to be wrong about what you have.

The expensive beginner mistake

Paying verified prices for unverified signatures. It is the defining error of this field. A signature with no documented history is unverified, whatever the seller believes, and it should be priced as unverified. Buying memorabilia.

The second is believing a certificate without reading the issuer's name.

How to learn without paying for it

  • Learn the three words — match-worn, match-issued, replica — and ask which, every time. How it is assessed.
  • Learn the provenance ladder and where a piece sits on it.
  • Buy unverified things cheaply and enjoy them for what they are.
  • Ask "how do you know?" and listen to the shape of the answer rather than its confidence.

Pick a focus

A club, a tournament, a decade, a single player. Focus also makes provenance easier, because you learn what the real documents look like.

Store it from the start

Out of light above all — ink fades and sunlight does it fastest. Fabric in cotton, paper flat between boards. Storing memorabilia.

Questions people ask

Can I ever be certain about a signature?

Not from a video call. Buy at prices that survive doubt.

Are replicas worth collecting?

Yes, as replicas, cheaply, and plenty of people do.

Is a framed piece a good buy?

Ask to see it out of the frame. Glass hides condition and risks the item in transit.
