Metzee compared with an auction house

Reach, speed and what it costs to try. And the things a room full of people still does better.

An auction house and a live show are the same idea in different rooms. Both are a timed contest with an audience. What differs is who can get in, how long it takes, and what happens to the things that do not sell.

What a room does better

Seeing the thing. A viewing day is the real advantage, and it is a large one for anything where condition is the value — furniture, art, anything you want to pick up.

Authentication and cataloguing. A house with specialists will attribute, describe and stand behind it. That work is why people consign there, and a marketplace does not do it for you.

A standing audience for a category. A sale with the right regulars in the room can beat a wider audience of people who are not looking for that thing.

What is different here

Who can bid. Anywhere in India, not whoever could travel.

How long it takes. A consignment can wait weeks for the right sale. A show happens when you decide to hold one, and a listing is live the moment you post it.

What it costs to try. Listing is free, and the commission comes out of a sale rather than being arranged in advance.

What happens to what does not sell. Here it stays listed, or you relist it. There is no collecting it back.

Compare on your own terms, not on mine

If you are weighing the two for a particular object, get the house's own terms in writing — seller's commission, any buyer's premium, photography, insurance, storage, and what happens on an unsold lot. Those vary by house and by category, and nothing a marketplace publishes about them is worth relying on.

Questions people ask

Which gets a better price?

Whichever puts your object in front of more people who want that object. For a specialist piece with specialist buyers, that can genuinely be the room.

Can I do both?

Yes, but not with the same object at the same time.

Is a live show basically an auction?

In the mechanics, yes: a rising price, a clock, and a bid in the last moments pushing the clock back by 10 seconds.

More: compared with a marketplace listing, is selling live worth it, how bidding works.
