Storing and caring for sneakers

Midsoles yellow in light and glue fails in heat. Sealed plastic makes both worse.

Sneakers are the clearest case of a rule that runs through this whole category list: what protects a thing for three days in a parcel ruins it over three years on a shelf.

What actually destroys them

Light. Midsoles yellow under UV, and it does not come back. A sunny shelf is the single most expensive place to keep a pair.

Heat. Adhesives soften and, over years, give up. A metal cupboard against a west wall in May is an oven.

Humidity. Mould on uppers and inside the lining, which in a monsoon takes weeks rather than years.

What to do instead

  • Out of direct light. A box, a cupboard, anything opaque.
  • Not against an outside wall, which is where heat and damp arrive first.
  • Silica gel in the box, replaced when it is spent. It costs very little and it is the whole defence.
  • Stuffed lightly with acid-free paper or plain paper, so the toe box holds its shape.
  • Not in a sealed plastic bag. This is the opposite of what the packing guide tells you for transit, and deliberately so: sealed plastic traps moisture against the upper for months.

The well-meant mistake

Wrapping a deadstock pair in cling film "to keep them fresh". It holds moisture in, and in an Indian summer that is how a stored pair comes out mouldy.

What it costs

Almost nothing. Silica sachets, a shelf out of the sun, and an inside wall. The expensive version — a dehumidified room — is for a collection, not a pair.

Questions people ask

Does yellowing come out?

Treat it as permanent. Prevention is the only real answer.

Should I keep the box?

For anything collected, yes — and store the box out of damp too, since cardboard is the first thing to go soft.

How often should I check?

Once at the start of the monsoon and once after. That is enough.
