Sizes in this category are the least reliable information available. Measurements are the most.
Ask for
Bust, waist, hip and length, measured flat — and the tape visible on camera. Shoulder and sleeve for anything structured. The lining, shown. Linings tear before outer fabric does, and they are easy to miss. Seam allowance, if you might have it altered. For ethnic wear this is the question that decides whether a piece can be made to fit.
Compare against your own
Measure something in your wardrobe that fits the way you like, flat, and keep the numbers. It is a better guide than any size chart, and it makes bidding quick.
Ask about stretch
"Is there stretch, and is that the relaxed measurement?" A garment measured while pulled will not fit the way the numbers suggest.
Ask about colour
Screens lie, and lighting lies more. Ask for the piece in daylight. A good seller will do it without complaint.
Condition questions
- Underarms, hems, lining
- Pilling, fading, shrinkage
- Beadwork and embroidery — any lifting, any missing stones
- Alterations
- Smell
What protection covers
Measurements that are materially wrong, a torn lining that was not mentioned, missing beadwork, or a different garment than shown: not as described, seven days from delivery.
A colour that looked different on your screen, when the seller showed it honestly in daylight, is a harder case — which is why it is worth asking during the show.
Questions people ask
What if a seller gives only a size?
Ask for measurements. If they will not, bid as though you have no fit information.
Can I ask for extra photographs mid-show?
Yes. That is what a live room is for. How to find a seller you trust.
Are alterations expensive?
Usually not, and often worth it — but only if there is seam allowance. Ask first.
