Collecting furniture and homeware

Start with small objects you can carry home. Furniture is the expensive way to learn.

Homeware is one of the best categories to learn in and furniture is one of the worst, for the same reason: size.

Where the first money should go

Small objects. Ceramics, glass, brass, lamps, textiles. Cheap, portable, no delivery problem, and they teach you materials, makers' marks and what honest wear looks like.

Furniture teaches the same things more slowly and at ten times the cost of being wrong.

The expensive beginner mistake

Buying a piece you cannot get into the room. Measure the piece, then the doorway, the stairs and the turn at the top — the narrowest point on the route is the real constraint. Getting the size right.

The second is refinishing something old, which usually subtracts. Common mistakes.

How to learn without paying for it

  • Turn everything over. Marks, repairs and construction are underneath.
  • Learn solid from veneer by handling both. It is a real difference and it is visible at an edge.
  • Ask what has been repaired or replaced, even when nothing looks wrong.
  • Buy damaged cheap pieces deliberately; honest damage is an excellent teacher.

Pick a thread

A material, a period, a maker, a function. A set of things that belong together is more pleasing and far easier to live with.

Look after it from the start

Stable humidity, out of direct sun, away from the flow of a cooling unit, felt under the feet. Wood moves with the room and the movement is what opens joints. Storing furniture.

Questions people ask

Is collection-only a problem for collecting?

It makes the room local, which is often where the good buying is.

Should I buy projects?

One or two, to learn. Not a houseful.

Vintage or antique?

Learn the words rather than the labels. The vocabulary.

More: buying furniture, what it is worth.
