Building a wardrobe from second-hand womenswear

Keep your own measurements, and always ask what seam allowance is left.

Buying womenswear second-hand works beautifully once you stop buying by size, which is the least reliable information in the category.

Where the first money should go

Your own measurements, taken from a garment that already fits you the way you like, flat. Bust, waist, hip, length, shoulder, sleeve.

Then everyday pieces in fabrics you want to learn — a cheap mistake teaches you something and costs very little.

The expensive beginner mistake

Buying by label size, or on a measurement taken while the fabric was stretched. Ask for the relaxed figure. Getting the size right.

The second is buying occasion wear with no seam allowance, which means it cannot be made to fit and the saving was imaginary.

How to learn without paying for it

  • Ask for the lining turned out. It fails before the outer fabric and almost nobody photographs it.
  • Ask about stretch and allowance every time, until it is automatic.
  • See colour in daylight and learn how much screens and warm bulbs lie.
  • Read listings that locate every mark — those sellers are teaching you where to look.

Build around a thread

Occasion wear, a fabric, a region's craft, a palette. For ethnic wear especially, following one weave teaches you more than buying broadly. Collecting sarees.

Look after it from the start

Clean before storing, tissue over any beadwork, refold worked pieces along different lines, cotton rather than plastic. Storing womenswear.

Questions people ask

Can most things be altered?

Taken in usually, let out only with allowance. Ask first.

Is beading a risk?

Only unexamined. Ask whether any is lifting and how many stones are missing.

Should I buy vintage?

Yes, carefully — check the folds and the underarms, where age shows.
