Pricing bags and accessories for a live auction

Condition moves the price further here than in almost any category. Price the corners.

Two bags of the same model, one with clean corners and one without, are not the same item at different prices. They sell to different people.

What moves the number

  • Corner and edge wear
  • Hardware condition
  • Interior condition and smell
  • What is included — dust bag, cards, strap
  • Whether the shape has held
  • How much you can say about where it came from

That last one belongs on the list. Certainty is part of what a buyer pays for.

Where to start

Everyday and fashion pieces: start low and let the room work. They are good room-builders and nobody is disappointed by an honestly described used bag.

Anything where the brand is the reason: start sensibly and use a reserve. A quiet night is not the night to discover what your bag is worth.

Sets and lots

Scarves, belts and small accessories sell well in lots. A bag does not belong in a lot with them.

Pacing

Corners, zip, inside, standing — that is a minute per bag, properly done. Three bags shown well will beat eight shown badly, every time.

Questions people ask

Should I price against what I paid?

No. What you paid is not information the room has or cares about.

Does repairing a bag before selling pay?

Rarely, and an undeclared repair is worse than the wear. Declare and discount instead.

Do I price a bag without its dust bag lower?

Slightly, and say it. It is the sort of detail that makes the rest of your listing believable.
