Pricing menswear for a live auction

Condition and fabric move the number. Lots move the room.

Clothing is a volume category for most sellers, which makes pace and honesty worth more than any individual price.

What moves the number

  • Condition, especially at cuffs, collar and hems
  • Fabric — natural fibres and heavier cloth hold value
  • Whether it has been altered
  • How complete the description is — measured garments sell higher than sized ones

Where to start

Everyday pieces: low start, quick pace, let the room work. This is how you build the audience that makes the better pieces sell.

Heavier, scarcer or branded pieces: start sensibly and use a reserve where a quiet night would hurt.

Lots

Shirts, tees and basics sell well in lots when they are a coherent size. "Five shirts, all measured 52cm chest flat, all described" is a sellable lot. A mixed bag of sizes is not.

Keep anything notable out of the lot and run it alone.

Pacing

Measuring on camera takes twenty seconds and it is the best twenty seconds in your show. Build the pace around measuring rather than skipping it.

Questions people ask

Should I price against retail?

Know it, do not anchor on it. The room is pricing a used garment, not a new one.

Do I price alterations down?

Slightly, and describe them. For some buyers an altered garment is exactly right.

Are lots worth the effort?

Yes, for volume and for filling a room. Measure the lot as a whole and be honest about the range.
