Selling words you will meet

Sell-through, dispatch window, chargeable weight, delivery profile, zone, reserve. The words that turn up once you are actually selling.

The buyer's words are elsewhere. These are the ones that start appearing in your own screens a fortnight in.

Sell-through — the share of what you listed that actually sold. The one number worth acting on, because it is the only one that knows about the things that did not sell.

Dispatch window — how long you have to hand a paid order to the courier. 48 hours unless you set your own.

Delivery profile — a named set of delivery prices you can point many listings at, so changing your rates is one edit rather than two hundred. You can keep up to ten.

Zone — an area you deliver to, defined by radius, PIN codes, districts, states, or all of India.

Pickup point — a place you let buyers collect from. Up to five.

Chargeable weight — what the courier actually bills: the greater of the real weight and the volumetric one. Volumetric is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5000. A light, bulky parcel is charged on its size, which is why a box that is mostly air costs the same as one that is full.

Reserve — a price below which you will not sell. Bidding can run under it; the item simply does not change hands.

Increment — the step between bids. Left alone it is 5% of the starting price, with a floor of ₹10.

Starter slots — a brand-new store can have five buy-now listings on sale at once. The limit lifts with the tier.

Balance — your running total between a sale and a payout, with every deduction shown against the order that caused it.

Settlement hold — the 24 hours a delivered order's money waits before it can be withdrawn.

Strike — a record against an account. A seller's come from policy and missed dispatches, and enough of them stop things being available.

Deadstock — unsold old stock, never used. A description, not a grade.

Questions people ask

Is sell-through the same as how much I sold?

No, and that is the point of it. Revenue counts the wins; sell-through counts the attempts.

Do I need to understand chargeable weight to sell?

Only if you post things. If you do, it is the difference between a delivery price that covers the courier and one that does not.
