Selling to another state

What changes practically — almost nothing — and where the tax question starts, which is the part to take to an accountant.

Selling to another state is the normal case here, not a special one. A zone can be a radius, a set of PIN codes, districts, states, or all of India, and most stores choose the last of those without thinking about it.

Here is what actually changes, and the one thing that is not ours to answer.

What changes practically

The delivery costs more and takes longer. That is the whole of it, mechanically. If your delivery price is one flat number for the whole country, the far parcels are being paid for by the near ones — which is a choice, not a mistake, as long as you made it on purpose.

Chargeable weight bites harder. A courier bills the greater of the real weight and the volumetric one, so a light bulky parcel going a long way is where a flat rate hurts most.

Returns travel twice. A faulty item coming back from three states away costs two long journeys.

What zones are for

Set up a zone per group of states you actually sell to, with a price that reflects the distance. That is fifteen minutes of work once, and it stops the quiet leak of absorbing delivery you never intended to absorb.

If some items should not travel far at all — heavy, fragile, perishable — set that per item rather than across the store. Collection exists for exactly these.

The language question, which is practical rather than legal

A buyer three states away may not read your language. Writing your listings so the measurements, condition and delivery terms are unambiguous matters more at distance, because the conversation that would have cleared it up is less likely to happen.

Where the tax question starts

This is the part where a marketplace should stop talking.

Selling across state lines is where GST questions genuinely begin for a small seller — whether you need to register, what place of supply means for you, what you charge and what you can claim. The answer depends on your turnover, what you sell and where you are, and it is not the same for two sellers on the same street.

What we can tell you is only what we do: what we charge you, what is deducted, and what appears against each order. What you owe on your own earnings is a question for an accountant, and a cheerful paragraph here guessing at it would be worse than silence.

Ask one before you grow, not after. It is a short and cheap conversation at the start of a year and an expensive one at the end.

Questions people ask

Do I need a GST number to sell to another state?

That is exactly the question to ask an accountant, because the answer depends on your situation rather than on Metzee.

Can I just not sell outside my state?

Yes. Set your zones to the states you want, and nothing outside them can order.

Does Metzee handle the tax on my sales?

No. We charge our commission, show the GST on that commission, and deduct what is deducted. Your own tax on your own earnings is yours.

More: do I need to charge GST, shipping across India, delivery zones explained, can I get a tax report.
