Storing and caring for bags

Stuffed, breathing and out of plastic. A sealed bag in a monsoon grows mould on leather.

Leather is a material that was alive, and it keeps some of the habits — it wants air, and it holds a shape.

What actually destroys them

Humidity, which grows mould on leather and inside linings. This is the main failure in an Indian climate and it happens in weeks.

Being stored empty, which lets the bag fold under its own weight and whatever is on top of it. A fold line in leather can be permanent.

Light, which fades and dries.

Plastic, which traps moisture against the leather for months.

What to do instead

  • Stuffed with plain paper or bubble until it holds its own shape
  • In a cotton dust bag, not plastic — this is the opposite of what the packing guide says for transit, and deliberately so
  • Upright, not stacked, with nothing leaning on it
  • Out of light, away from an outside wall
  • Silica in the cupboard, not inside the bag against the leather

Hardware and straps

Wrap buckles and chains so they cannot press into the body. Store a strap uncoiled or loosely coiled; a strap folded at one point for years keeps the fold.

Smell

A closed cupboard with no airflow is how a bag acquires the storage smell that later costs you a sale. Air the cupboard occasionally. Common mistakes.

What it costs

A cotton bag and some paper. The expensive version is a mould bloom on a lining.

Questions people ask

Should I condition the leather?

Sparingly and rarely, with something appropriate to the leather. Over-conditioning darkens it permanently.

Is the original dust bag worth keeping?

Yes — for the sale and as the correct first layer in storage.

Can I store bags in their boxes?

Yes, if the box is dry and the bag is stuffed. Check them after the monsoon.
