Can I check the item before paying at pickup?

No — it is already paid when you arrive. What you can do instead is better than it sounds.

No. A pickup order is paid before you collect it. You pay at checkout like any other order; collection is the delivery method, not the moment of sale.

So there is no "look first, then hand over the money" at the gate.

What you can do instead

Inspect it before you hand over your pickup code.

That is the real equivalent, and it is why the app tells you: Only share it once you have the item in hand.

The code is how the store confirms the handover. Until you give it, the order is not completed — so the sequence that works is:

  1. Arrive.
  2. Open it and look at it. Compare it with the listing: the flaws that were described, the ones that were not, what is included.
  3. If something is wrong, say so then, in person.
  4. Only then give the code.

Why that is worth more than paying on the spot

Because the payment is protected while you are standing there.

If you had paid cash at the gate and found a problem at home, you would be chasing a stranger for a refund with no record. Instead the money is inside the system, buyer protection applies to the order, and a dispute is decided within 48 hours of being opened.

Almost every seller resolves a problem at handover on the spot, precisely because the alternative for them is a dispute they may lose. You have more leverage standing in front of them with the code in your pocket than you would with cash in your hand.

What to actually check

  • The flaws named in the listing — are they as described?
  • Flaws that were not named. This is the one that matters.
  • What is included — box, papers, dust bag, charger.
  • Size. The commonest surprise, and the easiest to check in person.

If something is wrong

Say so, calmly and specifically. "The listing didn't mention this mark on the back" is a sentence most sellers answer with a discount or a refund.

If you cannot agree, do not hand over the code, and raise it from the order. How to raise a problem

What you should not be asked for

Money. The order is paid. Nobody should be asking you for cash at handover, and anyone who does is worth reporting. Can I pay in cash?
