Delivering antiques: courier, local or collection

The most fragile category on the site, and the one where collection is most often the right answer.

In most categories collection is an option. Here it is frequently the professional choice.

Decide before the show

A piece that must be collected sells into a local room, and that is a smaller room at a different price. That is a decision, not a disappointment — and it has to be made before bidding starts, because pickup terms are agreed by the buyer before they bid. How pickup works.

The four options

Collection — for anything heavy, large, fragile or irreplaceable. Your own delivery — excellent locally, and the only method where you control the handling. Courier — for small, robust pieces that can be double-boxed properly. Buyer arranges — for furniture, where a buyer's own transport is often the sensible route.

What decides it

Weight, size and fragility, in that order. A courier parcel has to survive being dropped; if your piece would not, it should not be in one. Packing antiques.

Glass and mirrors: do not post. Take the piece out of the frame or offer collection.

Collect-by terms

Set a collect-by window you can live with — 72 hours unless you change it, within a floor of six hours and a ceiling of 336. If it is not collected, the store keeps a share: 7% by default, 20% at most. Say the terms in the show as well as the listing.

Combining wins

Small decor combines. Furniture does not. Combining is on by default with whatever you set for each later win, and in this category it is worth thinking about per piece rather than per show.

Questions people ask

Can I refuse to post something?

Yes, and saying so in writing is the professional answer for an unsuitable item.

Should I offer buyer-arranged transport?

For furniture, often. It puts the choice and the cost with the person who knows their own access.

What about dismantling?

Say whether you will, bag and label every fixing, and include any instructions.
