No company required. Most sellers on Metzee are individuals, and nothing asks whether you are one.
What is actually required
A tax identity. A GSTIN if your business is registered for GST, or an ECO enrolment number if it is not — the shorter route made for people selling through a marketplace. This is the one that stops a sale if you skip it. Do I need to charge GST on what I sell?
A bank account in your own name, with your PAN. Do I need a bank account to sell?
To be 18 or older. How old do I have to be to sell?
That is the list. A company is not on it.
When a company does make sense
Not a Metzee question, and worth an accountant's hour rather than a blog page. The usual reasons are turnover, liability and how you want to be taxed — none of which this site can judge for you.
What is true is that you can start without one and incorporate later. Plenty do. The store carries on; what changes is the paperwork behind it.
What a store name is not
It is not a company. Calling your store something does not create a legal entity, and store names are not held exclusively here either. Is my store name already taken?
So trading under a name is fine; implying a company that does not exist is not.
If you already have a company
Then use its GSTIN and its bank account, and make sure the account name matches — a payout to a name that does not match is rejected by the bank. Setting up payouts
The sole-trader version, practically
Keep your sales records. Your ledger and the financial-year figures export as files, which is what an accountant wants. Can I get a yearly summary for my accountant?
Keep business and personal purchases separable, even without a separate account. A note on what you bought for stock is enough to start.
Get the tax identity sorted before you list, because everything else waits on it.
The honest summary
The barrier to selling here is lower than people expect, and the one piece of paperwork that genuinely blocks you is free and takes minutes. I only want to sell a few things
More: who can sell on Metzee, what documents are needed, can I sell on behalf of somebody else.
