Metzee does not require you to hold insurance. Nothing in opening a store, getting verified or taking payouts asks for a policy.
That is the only part of this question anyone here can answer definitively. The rest depends on what you sell, where you sell it from, and how much of it — and it is a question for an insurance broker or your accountant, not for a marketplace's help pages.
What Metzee does require
- A GSTIN or an ECO enrolment number, before your store can sell at all
- FSSAI, if you sell food
- Business registration, if you sell as a registered business
- A PAN on file, to be paid
That is the list. What documents are needed.
What is covered without insurance
Worth knowing before you buy a policy for a risk that is already handled:
A parcel that goes missing or arrives damaged is a buyer-protection matter, decided on the order, with the money still inside the system while it is decided. Not an insurance claim. Is my delivery insured?
A buyer who does not pay costs you nothing but time — the win lapses on its own. A buyer has not paid me
Where a professional would actually be worth asking
Not because we are being cautious — because these are real situations where the answer varies and getting it wrong is expensive:
- You hold significant stock at home or in a unit. A household policy often excludes business stock, which people discover after a fire or a flood rather than before.
- Buyers come to your premises for pickup. Someone on your property is a different risk from someone receiving a parcel.
- You make what you sell, especially anything consumed, worn against skin, or used by children.
- You sell high-value single items where one loss in transit is a month's income.
- You have employees, which brings its own statutory requirements.
In each of those, the right move is one conversation with a broker, with honest figures. It is cheaper than the alternative and much cheaper than a guess from a blog post.
What we will not do
Tell you that you are fine. We cannot see your stock, your premises or your turnover, and a reassuring sentence here would be worth nothing to you if it turned out to be wrong.
