How do I get buyers to leave reviews?

By giving them something to say. The things that produce reviews, and the one that costs you them.

Most people do not review most purchases. That is normal everywhere and not a sign you did badly.

What raises the rate is not asking harder. It is giving someone a specific reason to bother.

What actually produces reviews

Arriving sooner than expected. The single biggest one. A buyer told three days who gets it in two has a story.

Packing that shows care. Not expensive — considered. People photograph it.

Being told what is happening. A message when it goes out, and a straight answer when something is wrong, produce more reviews than a perfect silent order.

A note. Thirty seconds, and it is mentioned more than anything you could buy. Should I put a note in the parcel?

Handling a problem well. Counter-intuitive, and true: a buyer whose broken item was replaced without an argument writes a better review than one whose order was merely fine.

What costs you reviews

Asking for a specific rating. "Please leave five stars" reads as pressure and produces worse reviews than silence. Say nothing about stars.

Chasing by message. One mention in the parcel is the most you should do. A follow-up message asking for a review is the thing people complain about.

Going quiet when something goes wrong. This is how a middling order becomes a bad review.

What to do about a bad one

Answer it, calmly and factually. A store can respond, and a measured reply persuades far more future buyers than the review discourages. A defensive one confirms it.

Fix the thing it names, if it is right.

Do not report it because it is low. A one-star review describing a real experience stays, and reporting it wastes everybody's time. Report personal details, abuse, or something about a different order. Can a review be removed?

Remember they know who you are. Reviews are not anonymous here, which is what keeps them honest — and what makes a civil reply land. Can the seller see who left a review?

The number that matters

Not how many reviews. Whether a buyer reading them learns something true about you. Twelve specific reviews beat eighty saying "good".

And the review you most want is from the order that went wrong and was put right. You cannot plan those; you can only be the kind of store that earns them.

More: should I put a note in the parcel, can a review be removed, what does a realistic first month look like.
