Setting up delivery before your first show

Do this before you list anything. It is the ordering mistake almost every new seller makes.

Set delivery up first. Before listings, before a show.

The reason is mechanical: each listing carries its own delivery option, and if the options do not exist yet, every listing you make has to be edited afterwards.

The three questions

What can you post? Small, robust, not perishable.

What is local only? Anything you would rather hand over than trust to a van. Cakes. Tall things.

What must be collected? Glass, framed work, anything a courier will refuse, anything with a life measured in hours.

What you are setting up

Zones — where you deliver, and how you define it. The five ways.

Rates — what it costs. The five rules.

Pickup points, if you offer collection, with the terms. How.

Then each listing points at one of these.

The four methods

Your own delivery — you or somebody on a scooter. A courier. Pickup. Buyer arranges — their driver, which is what people use for furniture.

Questions people ask

Can I just offer one option for everything?

You can, and you will be wrong about a third of your stock.

What if I do not know what a courier will charge?

Find out before setting rates. Guessing is how a margin quietly disappears.

Can I change delivery settings later?

Yes, and it affects listings pointing at them. Check before a show.

Do I have to offer pickup?

No. It is worth offering for anything that travels badly.

Next: delivery zones.
