What does Metzee actually do about fakes?

Not authentication. What it does instead, said plainly enough that you can judge it.

Metzee does not authenticate anything. Nothing passes through its hands, nobody examines items, and there is no verification badge on a listing.

Saying otherwise would be the most harmful lie available here, because you would stop checking.

What it actually does

Counterfeits are banned outright, and labelling one honestly does not make it allowed. Can I sell a replica if I say it is a replica?

Listings come down when found, with a reason recorded, and the seller is told what it was. That is moderation after the fact — found means reported or spotted, not screened. Why was my item taken down?

Sellers are checked as people before they can take payments: identity and a payout account in their own name. Not a quality check, but it means a findable person with money at stake rather than an anonymous listing. How sellers are checked

A pattern gets an account suspended, not just the listing. One mistake and a habit are treated differently.

Your money is held until the item reaches you, and a not-as-described dispute is decided on evidence. That is the backstop that works regardless of whether anything was spotted in advance. How buyer protection works

What the format gives you that a photograph cannot

A listing shows you what the seller chose. A live show lets you ask for what they did not.

"Can you show me the label, close up?" · "Turn it over." · "Tilt it to the light." · "What is the worst thing about it?"

A seller who will not do those on camera, holding the item, has answered you. That is a better check than any badge, and it is available on every show. Can I ask for more photos before bidding?

What you should do in the risky categories

Buy from stores with a record, for anything expensive and frequently faked.

Ask about provenance, and treat a long confident story with nothing attached as colour rather than evidence. What is provenance?

Check a grading label's serial against the grader's own database, live, while the seller holds it. What is professional grading?

Start small with a new store. Should I bid with a seller who has no sales yet?

If you receive one

Raise it from the order as not as described, within the window. You are refunded; and report the store separately, because your refund and their conduct are two different outcomes and the second only happens if somebody says so. What happens to a reported seller?

Why the strictness protects honest sellers

A marketplace known for fakes does not lose the fake sellers — it loses the real ones, because buyers stop being able to tell and stop buying from anyone.
