Delivering food and drink: courier, local or collection

For most perishables, collection or local delivery is the only honest answer.

Food is the one category where the delivery decision can make the sale impossible, and it has to be settled before anything is listed.

Ask the courier before you list

Many couriers refuse perishables, chilled and frozen goods outright. Some restrict liquids. Transit times vary and a parcel can sit over a weekend.

If the answer is no, the listing is collection only or local delivery, and it should say so in the first line. Packing food.

What posts and what does not

Posts: shelf-stable packaged goods, sealed, in date, not heat-sensitive. Does not post: anything that must stay cold, anything close to its date, and anything heavy and cheap where delivery costs more than the food.

The four options

Courier for shelf-stable goods only. Your own delivery locally — the best option for most fresh food. Pickup — honest and common in this category. Buyer arranges occasionally.

When collection is the honest answer

Whenever the food would not survive the journey, and whenever the date is close. Pickup terms are agreed before bidding with a collect-by window — and this is the one category where the terms have a special case: for items that spoil, if it is not collected in time the store keeps a flat 20% and the rest is refunded. Set that honestly. How pickup works.

Combining wins

Shelf-stable items combine fine. Anything with different storage needs does not — say so rather than bundling a chilled item with a dry one. Combining is on by default and you set what each later win adds.

Before all of it

The licence question comes first, and it is yours rather than Metzee's. Selling food sets it out, and the policy is explicit. Prohibited items.

Questions people ask

Can I use a cold chain?

Only one you can actually rely on, and say so in the listing.

Is local-only a disadvantage?

A smaller room, and for perishables the only honest one.

What if it spoils in transit?

Your photographs, the date and the service used decide it. How returns work.
